There’s an iconic corner of Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills that most Angelenos have driven past a thousand times without registering. West of Sepulveda, the Boulevard thins out. It’s the stretch people politely decline to drive to.

Casaléna is changing that — and it’s doing it from a building that has been quietly collecting stories since 1982.

The Building Came First

In 1982, John Makhani built a cedar-clad A-frame at 22160 Ventura Blvd. The February 1983 photos say everything about the era: striped awnings, a wrought-iron lamp post, a Buick at the curb.

The first restaurant was Lautrec, fine-dining French, named after the French painter. Then Piacere in 1992. Villa Piacere in 1997. The Villa in 2011. Then the pandemic. For the first time in nearly four decades, the corner went dark.

The House They Grew Up In

Angel and John Makhani ran restaurants, but the real education happened at home. Their household in LA worked as a welcome center: friends dropping by unannounced, fruit permanently on the table, dinner together every night no matter how busy the business got.

“We understood hospitality because we lived it,” says Chloe Makhani.

So when she and her brothers Brandon and Tyler decided to build their own restaurant, the dark building on Ventura Blvd was the obvious answer—even though conventional wisdom said Woodland Hills couldn’t support a destination. Two years of buildout, mostly through the pandemic, with designer Margaret O’Brien. Casaléna opened in June 2023. Chloe runs brand, Brandon runs operations and menu R&D, Tyler runs the numbers.

The Room

The restaurant has five distinct places to sit. The main dining room sits under a glass A-frame ceiling—the modern descendant of that 1983 silhouette. Off it, an atrium terrace; below, a sunken garden; upstairs, another dining room, a balcony, and a private events space. The team calls the design “House of Light”: low glowing fixtures, indoor trees, Italian ceramics, Slim Aarons-adjacent photography.

What Léna Would Serve You

The name comes from Léna, a fictional hostess who serves as the house’s north star. Casa Léna: Léna’s house.

The menu is coastal Mediterranean — Spain, Italy, France, Greece, filtered through California. House-made pastas, pizzas, focaccia. Whole butterflied branzino with chimichurri. A 34-ounce Wagyu tomahawk. The two dishes in every review: Sweet Corn Agnolotti in brown butter and the Grilled Caesar on Little Gem.

The clearest family fingerprint is the Kale, Avocado and White Bean salad. Angel Makhani suggested adding dates; they’re now in the salad and the vinaigrette.

“Our mom always put dates in salads,” Chloe says. “I think the date really gives that punch, that flavor, that excitement to something that might be a little bit more ordinary.”

Three Years In

The bar runs to midnight on weeknights, 1 a.m. on weekends. Casaléna has taken OpenTable Diners’ Choice three years running, and the Thursday crowd spills out the front door — in a neighborhood people wouldn’t drive to three years ago.

Mirate delivers on all three: Chef Alan Sanz’s ingredient-driven Mexican menu is built for bold appetites, and the two-bar setup (including a dedicated mezcaleria) means the night never has to slow down. Order the spiciest thing on the menu. You know you want to.

You're not chasing trends, Taurus — you're chasing comfort, and you want it done right. Tucked into the Brentwood Country Mart, Farmshop's California-driven menu of house-made pastries, farm-fresh plates, and unhurried service is basically your love language. Come for dinner, stay for the bakery case on your way out.

Cobi's

Santa Monica

Gemini needs a room that keeps up with a mind that never stops moving. Cobi's floral wallpaper, velvet curtains, and South Asian small plates built for sharing (and talking over) are made for exactly that kind of night. Order widely, talk to the table next to you, and don't sit still too long.

Casaléna

Woodland Hills

Home is where the heart is, and for Cancer, that's a candlelit patio that feels like somebody's (very well-designed) backyard. Casaléna's coastal Mediterranean menu leans nostalgic and generous — the kind of food that makes you want to linger at the table long after the plates are cleared.

Funke

Beverly Hills

Of course it's Funke. Evan Funke's handmade pasta, the Art Deco room, the rooftop bar overlooking Beverly Hills — this is a restaurant that knows how to make an entrance, which makes it the only logical stage for you. Dress up. Order the pasta tasting. Let the room notice.

Étra

Melrose Hill

Virgo doesn't want more, Virgo wants correct. Étra's tight, precise Italian menu and quietly beautiful room reward exactly that kind of discernment — every plate here is edited down to what actually matters, plated with a level of care you'll appreciate more than most.

Marvin

West Hollywood

Libra wants beauty and balance, and Marvin's striped awning and candlelit French bistro charm hits both. It's romantic without trying too hard, chic without being cold — order the natural wine, split something at the bar, and let the evening find its own easy rhythm.

Jones

West Hollywood

Dim lighting, a horseshoe bar, red leather stools, and pizza that's been a late-night institution for decades — Jones was built for Scorpio's after-dark energy. It's moody, a little clandestine, and exactly the kind of place you don't tell everyone about.

Berenjak

DTLA Arts District

You need your dinner to feel like a trip, Sagittarius, and Berenjak's contemporary Iranian menu — kababs, mazeh, fresh-baked breads, all under warm lantern light in the Arts District — delivers a night that tastes like somewhere you haven't been yet. Bring the whole table and order everything.

Baltaire

Brentwood

Capricorn doesn't need to reinvent the wheel; you need the wheel to be excellent, every single time. Baltaire's been Brentwood's go-to modern steakhouse for a reason — polished, consistent, quietly confident. Order the dry-aged cut and a serious bottle of red. You've earned it.

Found Oyster

East Hollywood

Aquarius doesn't do velvet ropes — you want the spot that's doing something nobody else is. Found Oyster's blue-collar-oyster-bar-meets-natural-wine-list concept, disco ball included, is exactly that kind of idea done well. Sit at the counter, order the whole raw bar, talk to the chefs.

Nobu Malibu

Malibu

Dreamy, watery, romantic to the core — Pisces belongs oceanside. Nobu Malibu's glass-walled dining room opens straight onto the Pacific, and the seafood-forward menu (yellowtail sashimi, black cod, the works) is as soft and serene as the view. Time it for sunset.

You don’t need a flight to Positano to get that golden-hour, rosé-in-hand feeling — LA’s been quietly building its own version of Euro summer for years. The city has no shortage of restaurants running a house playlist and calling it atmosphere. What’s rarer is a dining room built around a bandstand, where the musicians are the whole reason for the reservation, not background noise for it.

These four rooms treat live jazz as infrastructure, not decoration. Book the table closest to the piano.

Casaléna's dining room already leans transportive, all warm light and coastal Mediterranean plates, and on Tuesday nights it shifts registers: a live jazz band plays from 7 to 10pm, standards drifting over the tables while the kitchen keeps running. Same room, different rhythm.

Beverly Hills

Cipriani's Beverly Hills outpost keeps its Venetian menu upstairs and saves its best trick for The Jazz Café downstairs: zebra print, arched doorways, a baby grand at the center of the room. A curated lineup of musicians rotates through several nights a week, and the crowd dresses for it. Old Hollywood, but the band is real.

Vibrato Grill Jazz

Bel Air

Herb Alpert built this one in 2004, and it still runs on his instincts: a steakhouse-grade dining room with a stage at its center instead of off to the side. The kitchen holds its own with dry-aged cuts and classic sides, but the room is built to make the music the main event, not dinner theater with a horn section. Closed Mondays; every other night, expect a serious lineup.

The Baked Potato

Studio City

Don Randi opened this room in 1970, and it has run almost exactly the same way ever since: a narrow, low-ceilinged space where the band sets up a few feet from the front tables and plays late. It's the oldest continuously operating jazz club in LA, and the appeal has never been comfort. It's proximity. Come for the potatoes stuffed with everything from chili to lobster, stay because you can't get this close to the music anywhere else in the city.

Every neighborhood in LA has a bar calling itself a speakeasy these days, but most of them just mean “dim lighting and a $19 cocktail.” The real ones still make you find the door. A phone booth you have to pick up. A bookshelf that slides open. A password that changes by the night.

Above Tail o' the Pup, inside what was once The Doors' recording studio, a pickle barrel hides the real entrance. Inside, forty-four seats and a run of theatrical tiki cocktails, the kind that arrive smoking or glowing, built for a night that isn't trying to be subtle.

The Georgian Room

Santa Monica

Tucked in the basement of the historic Georgian Hotel, restored to the exact Old Hollywood glamour that once hosted Judy Garland, with a live pianist working a vintage Steinway and a menu of dry-aged steaks built to match the room's own history.

Bar Jackalope

Downtown Los Angeles

A bar within a bar, hidden through Seven Grand and found only if you know to ask. Candlelit, quiet, and built around a serious collection of Japanese whiskey, with a curator on hand who treats every pour like it deserves a story.

Old Lightning

Venice

Behind an unmarked door at Scopa Italian Roots sits a 25-seat room stocked with over a thousand rare and discontinued spirits. Phones stay at the door here, reservations are required, and the bartender runs more of a conversation than a menu.

Cold Shoulder

Fairfax

A sliding library shelf inside Blue Collar opens onto an upside-down room, decor and all, with a hardbound cocktail menu running deep into the specialty end. Weekend password required, weeknights a little more forgiving.

Pasadena

Downstairs inside the dive bar 35er, an old-timey phone booth is the only way in. Pick it up, name your party size, and get buzzed into one of the smallest cocktail bars in LA, where the drinks are built the way they were a century ago.

There’s a right way to drink a dirty martini in this city, and it has nothing to do with how many olives you can fit on the pick. It’s about the room. A dirty martini done properly needs somewhere dim enough to disappear into, a bartender who treats brine like a spice rather than an accident, and a booth worth lingering in while the glass sweats.

So we found the LA bars actually built for it — the old-Hollywood institutions that never stopped serving them right, and the newer rooms making a real case for the next great version. Some lean savory and heavy on the olive juice. Some keep it clean and classic. All of them are worth the trip.

Loud with celebrity, low on pretense, and still one of the hardest reservations in the city, where the paparazzi outside are half the show and the well-built dirty martini inside is the other half. Ask for a seat at the bar if the dining room's booked — you'll be closer to the drink anyway.

Bar Benjamin

Perched above The Benjamin Hollywood with Art Deco fixtures and a balcony view of the Hollywood Hills, this is where the Dirtier Martini — Tito's, house brine, olives and capers — has become the thing people actually come upstairs for. Order it with the chips. You'll understand why once they arrive.

Tower Bar

West Hollywood

Inside the Sunset Tower Hotel, walnut-paneled and rose-lit, with a jazz pianist working the room and a client list that's stayed remarkably consistent since 1931. The martini here isn't flashy — it's just cold, classic, and exactly what the room demands.

The Normandie Club

Koreatown

Dark, unbothered by trend, and tucked into the ground floor of the historic Hotel Normandie. Martinis are the bar's stated obsession, built by a team that would rather riff off your preferences than hand you a printed menu — a fitting move for the bar that helped start Koreatown's cocktail scene in the first place.

Dan Tana’s

West Hollywood

Red booths, string lights, and a bartender named Mike whose stiff, no-nonsense martini has outlasted every trend LA has cycled through since 1964. This is the benchmark against which every other "old Hollywood" martini gets measured, whether it admits it or not.

Jones Hollywood

West Hollywood

Red-checkered tablecloths, a jukebox, and the Dirty Sue — their house dirty martini, poured tableside with a sidecar shaker that quietly gives you a second drink. Late-night, unfussy, and the kind of place you end up staying at longer than planned.

La Dolce Vita

Reopened in 2023 with its Rat Pack-era bones intact — lilac brick, leopard carpet, a gold-tinted bar — and a cocktail program built around Italian liqueurs and vintage classics, including a 50/50 martini smooth enough to explain why Sinatra kept coming back.

There’s a particular pressure to the birthday dinner. It’s not a date, where two people can disappear into a corner. It’s not a quiet anniversary. It’s a production — a group of your favorite people, a table that needs to hold all of them, a room that has to carry energy from the first cocktail to the last round of “happy birthday” sung slightly off-key. The food matters, but the room matters just as much. You’re not just feeding people. You’re hosting them.

Chef José Carles brings Panama to the Venice boardwalk in a space that feels transportive the second you walk in: seashell chandeliers, deep green booths, a semi-enclosed patio under tropical plants. The menu is built for sharing and never boring, which is exactly what you want when the table keeps growing.

Loreto

Frogtown

When you're in the mood to go big, this is the move. An upscale Mexican seafood house inside a cavernous Elysian Valley warehouse, built for large-format platters and a whole grilled fish that comes with an endless spread of salsas, beans, and tiny quesadillas your server will happily refill.

Mírate

Los Feliz

Moody, layered, and a little theatrical, set across multiple levels around an open-air dining room with a tree at its center. The mezcal program is one of the most serious in the country — currently ranked among North America's 50 Best Bars — so the cocktails alone are worth the night. Share plates, low light, and a room that leans into the late hours.

Alba

West Hollywood

Polished but social, where Adam Leonti’s “vacation Italian” lands somewhere between a proper dinner and a scene. Curved walls, bright murals, a retractable striped roof over the patio. Order the focaccia, get a pasta finished tableside, and let the buzzy crowd do the rest.

Bavel

Downtown

From Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis of Bestia, this is one of the most reliably impressive group meals in the city. Bold Middle Eastern flavors, generous portions, hanging greenery, and a room that always feels like something’s happening. Hard to book, worth the effort, impossible to leave disappointed.

Hatchet Hall

Culver City

Rustic and warm, with wood-fired Heritage American cooking and a sprawling, pergola-shaded patio that rallies a group when the weather’s right. The menu’s built for passing plates, and the back hides Old Man Bar for the after-dinner stretch. A Westside standby that still delivers.

Cobi’s

Santa Monica

Vibrant and flower-filled, where Cobi Marsh’s Southeast Asian street food — curries, satay, nasi goreng — arrives on mismatched vintage plates inside a pink-and-green room that’s pure charm. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, a lush patio, and a lively soundtrack make group dinners here feel like a full-on occasion.

Casablanca

Venice

Classic and gloriously nostalgic. A 40-year movie-themed institution near the boardwalk, where tableside margaritas, the famous calamari steak, fresh-pressed tortillas, and one of the largest tequila lists in the world deliver the birthday formula that never goes out of style.

Musso & Frank Grill

Hollywood

For the more traditional celebration. Open since 1919, this is the oldest restaurant in Hollywood — red booths, stirred-never-shaken martinis with a sidecar, steaks off LA’s oldest open-fire grill. Old Hollywood energy that makes any night feel like a proper occasion.

Expansive, transportive, and built for celebration. Long communal tables under a chandelier-lit garden canopy, high energy, and a menu designed for sharing. (Full disclosure: this one’s ours — but it’s on the list because it was built for exactly this kind of night.)

Do you ever stop and think about the people behind the restaurants you love?

We’re Avondale Hospitality, a family-run hospitality group building restaurants, bars, and gathering spaces across Los Angeles, led by three siblings: Brandon, Tyler, and Chloe Makhani. We currently own and operate Casaléna in Woodland Hills, with Sonico arriving in West Hollywood later this year and more concepts in the works for 2027. We also work alongside many of the restaurant owners and operators shaping this city through Avondale Equities, our real estate side.

We spend our days on both sides of the table: building our own concepts, and helping other people build theirs.

But this publication isn’t a brochure for our own spots.

It’s an outlet created to bring you into the world we live in. We are people obsessed with Los Angeles hospitality - who also happen to build some of it ourselves.

At Avondale, everything is rooted in community, creating spaces that bring people together in meaningful ways. We believe every LA neighborhood has its own rhythm, its own needs, and where there’s something missing, we see an opportunity to build. Because here’s what we believe: LA’s restaurant scene isn’t defined by trends. It’s defined by people. People with taste, conviction, and the nerve to try something that might not work. The chef who left a stable kitchen to chase one specific idea. The couple who poured a decade of savings into a forty-seat room. The bartender who treats a single cocktail like it’s the only thing that matters.

This is a deeper look at the creators behind the concepts and the faces behind the places. We’ll take you inside the rooms we can’t stop thinking about, introduce you to the people making this city taste the way it does, and point you toward the spots we’re genuinely obsessed with.
